'Coming out as a gay actor ruined my career in Hollywood,' says actor Rupert Everett

Actor Rupert Everett is urging gay stars not to 'come out' and to keep their sexuality a secret as it could end their film career.

The 50-year-old My Best Friend's Wedding star came out as gay 20 years ago and admitted that since then, he has been given supporting roles and not lead parts.

Everett is now suggesting that aspiring actors stay in the closet as it could harm their career.
He said: 'It's not that advisable to be honest. It's not very easy. And, honestly, I would not advise any actor necessarily, if he was really thinking of his career, to come out...

'The fact is that you could not be, and still cannot be, a 25-year-old homosexual trying to make it in the British film business or the American film business or even the Italian film business.

'It just doesn't work and you're going to hit a brick wall at some point. You're going to manage to make it roll for a certain amount of time, but at the first sign of failure, they'll cut you right off.

'And I'm sick of saying: "Yes, it's probably my own fault." Because I've always tried to make it work and when it stops working somewhere, I try to make it work somewhere else.

'But the fact of the matter is, and I don't care who disagrees, it doesn't work if you're gay.'

However, Everett added that he does believe he is happier than those other major stars who are keeping their sexuality a secret.
He said: 'I think, all in all, I'm probably much happier than they are. I may not be as rich or successful, but at least I'm vaguely free to be myself.'

But despite Everett's insistence that he is being overlooked for lead parts, his supporting roles have been quite prominent ones.

In 2007, he landed a cross-dressing role in the first St Trinian's movie as the school's headmistress Miss Camilla Fritton, and a second starring part as Miss Fritton's dodgy art dealer brother Carnaby, both main characters in the film.

He was then cast to play Miss Fritton in the sequel, St Trinian's 2: The Legend Of Fritton's Gold, due for release on December 18.
He also had the lead male role in The Next Best Thing, which starred Madonna as a yoga teacher who has a baby with her gay best friend, played by Everett, who was praised for the part, despite the film being a total flop.

And he lent his voice to the part of Prince Charming in the second and third Shrek films, which have become international box-office hits.

After a week of speculation, Swiss justice officials announced today that Roman Polanski will be released on bail Friday and return to his chalet in an Alpine resort.

The announcement comes a week after a Swiss court agreed to allow the famed director to leave prison on $4.5-million bail. SInce then, his release has been delayed as Swiss authorities awaited payment of the bond.

That snag appears to have been resolved, and officials said Polanski was to leave prison at 1 p.m. Friday, Zurich time. Arrangements for an electronic security system to monitor Polanski's movements were completed Tuesday, according to Swiss media reports.

The media have converged on the chalet, awaiting Polanski's arrival.

Swiss justice officials were quoted by AFP and Swiss news media as saying Polanski would be allowed to make unlimited phone calls and have full access to the Internet. Although he cannot leave his home, he can invite friends over and throw parties at the tony chalet in the ski resort of Gstaad.

"He will have no prison regime," Justice Ministry spokesman Falco Galli told AFP. "He is completely free to determine his daily schedule. It's also up to him to get in food and other supplies."

Police in Gstaad said they might block traffic and restrict access into Polanski's neighborhood if the media proved disruptive.

A court will eventually rule whether Polanski should be extradited to Los Angeles to face sentencing for having illegal sex with a 13-year-old more than three decades ago. Swiss justice officials repeatedly had denied his bail requests, saying he was a flight risk.

Under the terms of the bail, Polanski, 76, will have his phone calls monitored as well. Gstaad, a village of 2,500 with mountain views, has long been known as a celebrity hangout, having been home to Elizabeth Taylor, Roger Moore and David Niven, among others.

Who can replace Oprah as the next thoughtful, compassionate voice of reason on daytime TV?

Why, Nancy Grace, of course.

The she-bitch of cable TV summary judgment is coming to syndication, now cleared by stations in 80% of the country.

The ironically named HLN personality's new program, "Swift Justice With Nancy Grace," is set to debut in the fall of next year, courtesy of CBS TV Distribution.

The series won't literally replace the Big O -- they air in different time periods, with Oprah not departing until 2011.

But "Swift Justice" is the only new daytime show cleared so far for next year, so on the daytime TV psychic balance sheet, the Dark Side of the Force scores one point.

To celebrate All My Children's relocation to Los Angeles, and its upcoming 40th anniversary, The View will dedicate an entire episode to all things AMC on December 11.

Expect appearances by Agnes Nixon (creator of the show), Susan Lucci (Erica Kane), Debbi Morgan (Angie Hubbard), Michael E. Knight (Tad Martin), Cameron Mathison (Ryan Lavery), Rebecca Budig (Greenlee Smythe), Vincent Irizarry (David Hayward) - and a surprise guest!

A cool additional thing the show is doing: In a series of "ViewTube" shorts, Sherri Shepherd will have to solve a big mystery that develops behind the scenes at All My Children.

It didn't take long before someone used the Tiger Woods crash to cash in -- betcha didn't think it would be an AIRLINE COMPANY!?!?!?

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Spirit Airlines -- a discount carrier based out of Florida -- is running an ad on their website featuring an animated tiger (the animal) crashing an SUV into a fire hydrant -- sound familiar?

After the animation, a graphic pops up promoting their "Eye of the Tiger Sale" -- with fares starting at $9.

Sure, sounds like a good deal -- if you like your airline using a CRASH to promote itself!

Greeting all, I'm new to this forum, so if this has been asked (or discussed) a bazillion times, I apologize... (and please be kind, because I might be doing this all wrong)

Did anyone else notice in TURN LEFT, that they skipped over the Year-That-Never-Was?

I suppose, if the Doctor had died prior to meeting Martha, then Professor Yana would never have been able to come to Earth in the TARDIS... but in some ways, it still kinda bothered me that there wasn't even a "head nod" to Saxon. The Master (as Saxon) would have already been on Earth at the time of Runaway Bride. (With the whole 18-months earlier thing)

Maybe that's just masochistic me wanting to have seen what would have happened during that time if there hadn't been the Doctor? You know, would the Master had obliterated the planet, or was he just doing that to exact his revenge on the Doctor?

Like I said random, but I'd love to hear your thoughts!

Reese Witherspoon at The Houses of Parliament, London, where she spoke out Wednesday against domestic violence. The Hollywood star - pictured here posing on the terrace at the Houses of Parliament with the London Eye and Westminster Bridge in the background - was at the seat of British government to promote the joint campaign by the charity Refuge and Avon. At an earlier press conference, Witherspoon said there was an "inpenetrable wall of silence around violence" that needed to be broken. The problem is a "pandemic" around the world, she said. "I cannot tell you a person that I've met on earth who hasn't had this experience".
